Social Grants

The Social Assistance Act of 2004 provides the legislative framework for social assistance. SASSA processes applications, verifies eligibility, and pays grants to qualifying beneficiaries who are unable to support themselves and their dependants.

Grant types

Grant	Who it is for
Older Persons Grant	South African citizens, permanent residents or refugees aged 60 and above who meet the means test.
Child Support Grant	Primary caregivers of children who meet the means test — the country’s largest child poverty intervention.
Foster Child Grant	Foster parents of children placed in their care by a court.
Care Dependency Grant	Caregivers of children with severe disabilities who need full-time care.
Disability Grant	Adults who are unable to work because of a physical or mental disability, subject to medical assessment.
Grant-in-Aid	Grant recipients who require regular attendance by another person because of their physical or mental condition.
Social Relief of Distress (SRD)	Temporary assistance for people in crisis, including disaster and undue hardship, and the SRD grant for unemployed working-age adults.
